We’ve got a problem with modern slavery and labour exploitation in our industry.
And it’s not because we’re doing nothing.
I see people and companies everywhere taking steps to address modern slavery. We’re writing Modern Slavery Statements, identifying risks and working to mitigate them.
While the intentions are good, too often I see these efforts yielding little, to no meaningful impact.
What we’re doing right now, is not enough.
How I know we need to do more.
I’ve been a Sustainability Consultant in the interiors industry for 17 years.
I work with small and medium sized businesses in the product manufacturing, retail, architecture and design industry.
I serve on expert industry reference panels, provide feedback to ecolabeling standards and Product Aware, participate in committees, and deliver presentations at industry events.
Over the years, I’ve gained invaluable insight into the hidden corners of our industry. I see what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to understanding and addressing modern slavery.
I have a deep understanding of what is happening in our industry and, more importantly, what isn’t happening but should be.
My perspective is unique, and this is why what I have to say matters.
The road ahead is paved with challenges
Manufacturers and retailers are bombarded with requests from architects, designers, end users, government entities, and building and construction companies.
They are asked to sign contracts committing to combatting modern slavery in their supply chains, adhere to Supplier Codes of Conduct, and complete countless Supplier Self-Assessment Questionnaires.
Despite these measures, I frequently observe minimal follow-through or inconsistent levels of commitment—and sadly, this lack of action fails to drive meaningful change in our industry.
As a pragmatist, I have great compassion for all businesses that are taking action to end modern slavery.
Let’s not understate this – eradicating modern slavery is difficult, complex and challenging. It’s a significant undertaking, especially if the goal is to create meaningful impact.
This challenge is even greater for SMEs with limited time, money, and resources. But their involvement is essential; we can’t do it without them.
We must put people at the centre of our focus
I started my career focusing on the “E” in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).
About a decade ago, I shifted my focus to the “S.”
Why? Because people matter.
I wanted to understand labour exploitation and modern slavery within the supply chains of Australian manufacturers and retailers.
I wanted to learn what it is, how it happens, why it happens, and how we, as an industry, can do better for the people who make our products.
And now, I want to show you how to do the same.
What I’m here to do
My vision is to create a fairer, more just world by eliminating modern slavery and labour exploitation from the supply chains of Australian businesses in the interiors and fit-out industry.
Every product, every project, and every specification should uphold the basic human rights of the people who make them—because ethical design and procurement are the only way forward.
I want to empower passionate, empathetic action takers who lead the way in their organisation by inspiring and empowering others.
I want to work with industry professionals who truly care and are driven to create real, meaningful change to end modern slavery.
I want to build a community of leaders who understand the difference between ticking a box and taking meaningful action—leaders who want to be part of a movement that drives real impact.
I’m speaking to those who want to make a difference—those who want to understand more about modern slavery in our industry but don’t know where to start.
I’m also speaking to those already taking action but who have the courage to ask themselves the tough question: “Is the work we are doing truly making an impact?”
We need to do better for the workers in our supply chains who are all too easily overlooked or simply not considered.
And I invite you to join me.
What happens next?
I’m on a mission to transform the way our industry THINKS, FEELS, and ACTS in understanding and addressing modern slavery and labour exploitation.
We all need to work together—to share, to collaborate, to be courageous, and to be curious.
I’m sharing my insights, experience, passion, and wisdom so we can all effect meaningful change.
I’m going to show you what meaningful action looks like.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but that’s why collaboration is so essential. Together, we can find solutions—there’s always a way forward when we work courageously and collaboratively.
Let’s work together to create a fairer and more ethical interiors industry.
